Minister of Tourism & Higher Education, Government of Nagaland
"My eyes may be small, but my vision is sharp — and I can see the camera from a mile."
India's most followed state minister on social media — not because he campaigns online, but because he's genuinely, irresistibly himself.
Temjen Imna Along is the Cabinet Minister for Tourism and Higher Education in the Government of Nagaland, and a two-term Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Alongtaki constituency. Born in Mokokchung to the Ao Naga tribe, he first entered the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in March 2018, defeating his nearest rival by just 86 votes — a margin he would widen to 3,748 in his 2023 re-election.
As Tourism Minister, Along has made Nagaland's Hornbill Festival a nationally recognized cultural brand, consistently attracting thousands of domestic and international tourists to Kisama Heritage Village every December. Under his leadership, the festival's footprint expanded to include district-level celebrations, helicopter aerial rides, and a "sustainability-first" tourism mandate that positions Nagaland as India's premier eco-tourism destination.
As Higher Education Minister, he has championed skill-based learning over rote education, inaugurating PM-USHA infrastructure projects including Incubation Centres, Skill Hubs, and Girls' Hostels at government colleges across Nagaland.
But perhaps his most distinctive achievement is the bridge he has built between Nagaland and the rest of India through humor. Where most politicians guard their image with gravity, Along disarms with wit — turning racial stereotypes into comedy, his bachelor status into running jokes, and his ministerial helicopter into a punchline. He has made Northeast India's identity not just visible but beloved.
Minister Temjen Imna Along inaugurated three PM-USHA infrastructure projects — an Academic Building, Incubation Centre/Skill Hub, and Girls' Hostel — at Dimapur Government College on May 30, 2026. He asserted that Nagaland's future begins with transforming its education system, stressing that human resource development must take precedence over infrastructural expansion alone. "There was a time when the government used to call people to join service, but they did not join," he said, contrasting the past with the need for employment-ready graduates today.
At a crowded public event, a fan requested a selfie. Along, eyeing his waiting helicopter, delivered one line that trended nationally: "Chopper nikal jaayega!" The moment — four seconds of genuine humor — was covered by Zee News, India Today, The Federal, and Khabar XP.
Along told the Nagaland Legislative Assembly that the 26th Hornbill Festival significantly enhanced the state's international visibility. Extension of the festival to districts strengthened grassroots cultural participation. The FNTA agreement was also praised by Assembly members.
Along flagged off the Aerial Experience Rides helicopter service at Lerie Helipad, Kohima. The initiative, a collaboration between a private aviation company and the Tourism Department, offered aerial views of the festival grounds to enhance tourist experience during the 10-day event.
Speaking at the Autumn Festival at Nagaland House, New Delhi — a curtain-raiser to Hornbill Festival — Along declared sustainability the cornerstone of the state's tourism vision. "Nagaland, being an organic and environmentally conscious state, believes in sustainable tourism," he said.
Tourism & Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along actively participated in the first day of the Seventh Session of the 14th NLA at Kohima. The session addressed ongoing legislative business including education reform and tourism development frameworks.
Viral videos of Along countering racial slurs targeting Northeastern Indians with razor-sharp wit grabbed national headlines in 2022 and continue to be shared. His "small eyes, big vision" phrase has become a rallying identity statement for millions in Northeast India.
Across all platforms, Along posts himself — no PR team managing distance, no carefully crafted policy statements. Just a minister being a person.
Along has overseen the Hornbill Festival's transformation into an internationally recognized cultural event, held annually December 1–10 at Kisama Heritage Village. The 26th edition in 2025 attracted visitors from across India and multiple foreign nations, and expanded to district-level celebrations for the first time.
Along positioned sustainability as the cornerstone of Nagaland's tourism development strategy. As an organically farmed, forest-rich state, Nagaland is being branded as India's premier eco-tourism destination, leveraging its natural and cultural wealth responsibly.
Flagged off by Along at Lerie Helipad, Kohima, this initiative offered aerial rides over the festival grounds — a first for Nagaland tourism. Developed in collaboration with a private aviation company and the Tourism Department to enhance the visitor experience.
Inaugurated three PM-USHA (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) projects at Dimapur Government College in May 2026: an Academic Building, an Incubation Centre/Skill Hub, and a Girls' Hostel — directly supporting employment-ready and entrepreneurship-driven education.
Along has consistently advocated for education that produces graduates capable of thriving in the modern workforce — not merely holders of degrees competing for government posts. His reform vision centers on innovation, adaptability, and entrepreneurship as Nagaland's educational pillars.
Now in its 4th edition, the Autumn Festival at Nagaland House in New Delhi serves as a curtain-raiser to the Hornbill Festival. The event features handicrafts, handloom, horticulture, and live performances, bringing Naga culture to the national capital's audience each year.
Without a formal campaign structure, Along's public speeches and social media posts have organically created one of India's most effective counter-narratives against racism targeting Northeast Indians — turning discrimination into comedy, and comedy into pride.
Served as State President of BJP Nagaland for over three years, overseeing party growth and the successful 2023 election campaign that returned Along to the Assembly with 62.5% of votes — a 25-point margin from his debut 2018 win of just 0.72%.
With 771K Facebook likes, 556K Instagram followers, and 343K on X, Along has built the largest social media following of any Indian state minister — through authenticity alone. His engagement rate and national viral reach consistently outperform politicians with far larger profiles.
